Halloween safety
With Halloween a little over a week away, police are reminding drivers to be careful on the evening of the 31st, when trick-or-treaters will be out in force. Take special care on residential streets, especially after dark. Children (and their parents) going door-or-door should wear an item of reflective clothing and carry a flashlight, so that they can be easily seen.
With Halloween comes the possibility of fireworks, so be careful if you are using them, and be ready for loud noises. Keep pets indoors on the night, as they are apt to be easily frightened by the noise, and might run away.
New hours for detachment
As of December 1, 2016, the Ashcroft RCMP detachment office hours will be changing to Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office will be closed between noon and 12:30 p.m. for lunch.
The change in hours is consistent with what neighbouring detachments do. It will not affect the delivery of service from the police officers themselves.
Smash and grab
In the early hours of October 19, Ashcroft Safety Mart was the victim of a “smash and grab” break and enter. Thousands of dollars-worth of cigarettes were stolen, and damage to the store was significant. Police are seeking any witnesses who may have heard or seen suspicious activity around the store during the early morning of the 19th. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ashcroft RCMP at (250) 453-2216, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Dine and dash
On October 19, Manie’s Restaurant in Cache Creek was the victim of a “dine and dash”. A person of interest who does not live in the community, but frequently passes through it, has been identified, and police are investigating.
Vehicle stolen
On October 19, a blue 1991 Jeep YJ with a cylindrical strobe light on the roof was stolen from where it was legally parked in a parking lot in Cache Creek. The vehicle may subsequently have been observed on Highway 1 near the Kokanee Way exit in Kamloops on October 22.
Pedestrian injured
On October 22, a pedestrian was struck by a driver in front of Robbie’s Motel in Cache Creek, and sustained non-life threatening injuries. The driver was travelling at a very low speed when the pedestrian was hit. The driver is cooperating fully, and it is expected that Motor Vehicle Act charges will be laid.
Hunting season
RCMP are reminding everyone that it is hunting season, so wear colourful clothing when out walking in the bush or on the trail systems around the area. Hunters are reminded to be aware of local trespassing issues when hunting, and to wear appropriate clothing. Keep your firearms in a safe condition when in the bush or walking to your vehicles, so as to not alarm local citizens. The railway beds are not safe to walk on, and it is considered trespassing to be on their rights of way.
