The City of Delta has installed assisted listening devices at several municipal facilities to improve services for the deaf and hard of hearing.
According to a news release from the city, the recently-installed hearing loop technology eliminates background noise and provides clearer, improved sound for individuals with t-Coil equipped hearing aids or cochlear implants.
“We are working to incorporate the latest communications technologies to maximize accessibility and inclusivity for all residents and guests at city facilities,” Mayor George Harvie said in the news release.
A perimeter induction loop system was installed in council chambers to ensure improved service for individuals attending council meetings, and countertop assisted hearing systems have been installed at various locations inside city hall, including the engineering department, community planning and development, finance department, and administration/office of the city clerk.
The countertop devices have been installed at the Kennedy Seniors Recreation Centre, North Delta Recreation Centre and Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta, as well as at the Ladner Leisure Centre and McKee Seniors Recreation Centre in Ladner and the South Delta Recreation Centre and Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre in Tsawwassen.
Areas where assisted listening devices are available are are marked with a sign featuring the universal symbol for hearing loops (pictured below).
The project was supported financially by the Rick Hansen Foundation and B.C.’s Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation.
