“After consulting with family, I am happy to announce that I will be seeking re-election in the October Municipal Election for another term on council,” Coun. Michele Babchuk says, making it official this week.

Babchuk was elected to city council for the first time in 2014 after serving as a school board trustee for nine years, including three as chair.

“Throughout my first term I have been very pleased with the direction of Council and our ability to get things done,” Babchuk says. “I have enjoyed the challenges and successes of the past four years and look forward to continuing to advance our strategy’s surrounding infrastructure, community safety and economic development.”

Since 2014 Babchuk has also served as one of the city’s representatives on the Strathcona Regional District board and was elected to be its chair in 2017. She also sits on the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital and Solid Waste Management boards as well as serving as chair of the Strathcona Gardens Commission.

She has worked on the Community Partnership Committee, been the city’s representative on Success by Six, and is the liaison to the City of Campbell River/School District 72 Joint Committee.

In 2016 Babchuk was asked by Mayor Andy Adams to be one of three councillors to form the Select Committee on Governance to look at how council was functioning and communicating within committees. The committee’s recommendations are set to be implemented this fall.

“Michele has done a great job in her first term,” says fellow Councillor Larry Samson. “I look forward to supporting her and following her initiatives.”

Babchuk moved to Campbell River from Kitimat in 1999 with her husband Dan, son Sean, and daughter Amy. Now, also, with two grandkids, her daughter-in-law Kelsey and her parents living locally, she says she is proud to have four generations of family call Campbell River home.

“There’s no place I would rather live and no community I’d rather work for,” Babchuk says. “I want to thank my family and our community for their support, encouragement and advice.”

With Babchuk’s campaign officially up and running, she and her team invite anyone who would like to support her re-election bid, or want to hear more about her work at council, to email Babchuk4Council@gmail.com
