Bachrach nominated in Skeena-Bulkley Valley for next federal election

MP says NDP getting ready for snap election call by the prime minister

Amid speculation that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may be considering calling an early federal election, the NDP has nominated MP Taylor Bachrach to be its candidate in Skeena-Bulkley Valley.

Bachrach announced the news over Instagram on the weekend, noting a meeting was carried out over Zoom and that he was honoured.

“If a federal election is called, we’ll be ready to go,” he said.

“Thank you to our wonderful constituency executive, those who nominated me, and all of the members who attended the nomination meeting.”

Bachrach was nominated under the NDP’s incumbancy rule.

“The nomination rules of the New Democratic Party of Canada state that Electoral District Associations (EDAs) do not need to perform a candidate search process when an incumbent MP is seeking re-election,” said Adele Jonker, president of the Skeena-Bulkley Valley Federal NDP Riding Association.

“Given that Taylor Bachrach is seeking re-election, the EDA did not perform a search in accordance with this rule and requested approval from the Party to proceed with a nomination meeting, which was granted.”

She said local NDP members were notified 14 days in advance of a Zoom meeting Jan. 23, which was attended by approximately 70 people including party leader Jagmeet Singh.

“We’re very excited that Taylor has decided to seek re-election,” Jonker said. “He has been a fantastic representative for Skeena-Bulkley Valley and we’re proud to help him carry on his great work.”

Bachrach was recently named the NDP’s transport critic in Ottawa. He said his priorities in that role are sustaining air travel for the riding, defeating a motion in the House of Commons to ease a moratorium on oil tanker traffic on the North Coast and rail safety.
