50 YEARS AGO:
Three young local skiers, Kent Messenger, Lester Thompson, and Stephen Parker, provided assistance to the ski instructor at the Clearwater ski hill. The tow rope operated on Wednesday evenings and snow was plentiful.
Winners in the Christmas lighting contest in the commercial category were Wells Gray Auto Court and the Clearwater dormitory. Residential winners were Mr. and Mrs. Bud Woodman and Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bennett.
45 YEARS AGO:
First baby of the year at Doctor Helmcken Memorial Hospital was Loreli Sheil Harding, born on Sunday, Jan. 13.
Discussion took place between local Lions Club members and CMHC regarding the various types of buildings available as Lions planned their senior citizens’ housing project.
40 YEARS AGO:
Cold weather was one reason why Clearwater Sno-Drifters decided not to hold a B.C. Snowmobile Championship race. A second reason was a $1,000 per year insurance policy – not to cover the drivers, but to protect the spectators. The club was also having trouble getting work parties together.
A curling team from Clearwater Secondary School was heading to the provincial playoffs in Port Moody. Team members were Bob Arksey, Rob Kingelin, Don Stefanyshyn and Shawn Zakal.
35 YEARS AGO:
The Marg Lehto ladies curling rink from Clearwater advanced to the provincial finals in Kelowna after some very convincing play at the zone playoffs in Barriere. Members of the team were Lehto, Daisy Hystad, Linda Yurkiw and Debbie Mattenley.
30 YEARS AGO:
Clearwater’s first baby of the New Year was Niall Jacob Sallenbach, born on Jan. 2 at 3:18 a.m. Parents of Vavenby’s newest resident were Darren and Rhonda Sallenbach.
The Jackrabbit Ski League, a division of Cross Country Canada, held its first session in Clearwater under instructor Doug Nelson. About 15 children aged four to 11 were signed up.
25 YEARS AGO:
RCMP Cst. Russ Morrison caught a Clearwater man in the act of climbing out of a broken window to the Physiotherapy Clinic at the Firewest Building in Clearwater. He had been on a routine patrol when he noticed that plywood covering the window was ajar. The plywood had been put in place earlier that same evening during a previous break-in.
20 YEARS AGO:
The Wells Gray Outdoor Club executive decided there would be no 15th annual Wells Gray Loppet cross-country ski marathon. The club had been unable to find volunteers to fill key positions, said president Bryan Hodgkin. More than 120 skiers took part in the previous year’s race.
A record 22 individuals participated in the seventh annual Little Fort Polar Bear Dip. Clearwater fire chief Mark Salden and Little Fort chief Bob Goodmurphy took part to raise money for new radios.
15 YEARS AGO:
Over 100 people attended a Clearwater Action meeting at the Skills Center. The gathering was a follow-up on a town hall meeting held at Raft River gym in response to Weyerhaeuser’s announcement that it was going to close its Vavenby sawmill. “People expect there will be timber re-allocated as a result of a disastrous change like this,” said MLA Kevin Krueger.
10 YEARS AGO:
Clearwater residents experienced unusually extreme weather conditions during December, including heavier snowfall and lower than average temperatures.
5 YEARS AGO:
District of Clearwater passed a roads cross-section bylaw. “The District is at a critical stage for planning the future of its community,” said CAO Leslie Groulx. “This created an opportunity to develop a road network plan to assure long-term financial sustainability for Clearwater’s current and future tax base.”
Matco Investments Ltd., a private investment firm based in Calgary, acquired a 36 per cent interest in 1 YEAR AGO:
District of Clearwater would be receiving $160,000 from the provincial government for a biomass wood-chip fueled system in the North Thompson Sportsplex.
The system would be similar in type to the wood-chip fueled system already in place at Dutch Lake Community Centre.
