Balfour wildfire under control

The fire, which grew to 0.67 hectares, is under control

The BC Wildfire Service says a 0.67 hectare fire about two kilometers northwest of the Balfour ferry terminal is now under control.

Information officer Ashley Davidoff said the fire was reported Monday evening. Although it was within the local fire department’s jurisdiction, an initial attack crew was sent to help out.

More personnel were on site today along with one helicopter that bucketed water to minimize any spread.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused.

Meanwhile, last week’s thunderstorms started a fire near Hellroaring Creek near Salmo.

A third fire, on the west shore of Kootenay Lake at the Midge Creek campsite, was suspected to be human-caused.

All three fires were spot fires, 0.01 hectares or smaller.

A haze filled valleys in the region last week, though officials said it was from fires burning in northern Alberta.

The fire danger rating for the Southeast Fire Centre, which includes the West Kootenay, is generally low to moderate.
