Job fair organized next month for new store in Skeena Mall

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is holding a job fair in Terrace next month to recruit employees for its BC Cannabis store.

Around 17 employees are needed to open the province’s first store in Terrace, from store managers to cannabis consultants, says Kate Bilney of LDB communications branch. The job fair will be held on April 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Best Western Inn.

BC Cannabis received license approval from the City of Terrace in January to open a store in the Skeena Mall, between the Anytime Fitness and Mark’s.

As the legalization of recreational cannabis is still fairly new, knowledge of cannabis products and the industry is not required, Bilney notes.

“Customer service experience is definitely a massive bonus for us, but there aren’t necessarily any other requirements,” she says.

“There has been an industry, not necessary a regulated legal industry, but it has existed and we do understand that some people may not have that background knowledge. But now that it’s legal, they’re interested in getting into it.”

Successful candidates will receive extensive training using a provincial program concentrating on social practices related to safety and responsible adult use, comprehensive product knowledge and customer service skills.

“We do equip all of our staff with everything they need,” she says.

The door will be open to those who have had experience selling weed before legalization, though all candidates are required to undergo an enhanced security screening check in accordance with the Cannabis Control and Licensing Act to be eligible.

“As long as they’ve got a clean record, they would be considered,” she says.

Terrace’s BC Cannabis store could open by this summer or early fall, though an official opening date hasn’t been set yet.

While LDB recruiters will be collecting resumes at the event, all prospective candidates must also submit their application via the LDB’s online portal at www.bcldb.com/about/careers.
