Locals raised more than $40,000 for the BC Children’s Hospital at a dinner and auction held at the Friendship Centre on October 22.
Ten thousand dollars of the final amount raised came from a cheque donated by local business Stephen Bros. Contracting.
Other money was raised through a live and silent auction and a card draw. Notable items in the auction included a horse-drawn sleigh ride for 20 people which went for $2,000.
“After that item was auctioned, the guy who was donating it stood up and said ‘I’ll throw in another one for the same price’ so then he donated another one and someone else brought it for $2,000 which was pretty amazing,” said Michelle Roberge, one of the organizers of the event.
A Daniel Sedin signed Canucks jersey went for $1,700 and a Canucks jersey signed by the whole team went for $2,500.
The card draw involved a pack of 52 playing cards. Each card is sold for $20. A random card is then drawn from a second pack and the person with the matching card won a 32 inch flat screen TV.
Roberge said the event was a great success and raised over double the amount during the same event held last year which raised $16,000.
