The BCIT conductor training program returns to the Alberni Pacific Railway next week, which means increased rail traffic between Argyle Street and Smith Road at McLean Mill National Historic Site.
Two groups of eight students from the Lower Mainland will receive hands-on training as part of their program for two and a half days each, starting Monday, Nov. 14 and wrapping up Friday, Nov. 18.
Trains will be operating from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., APR spokesperson David Hooper said. “Drivers are asked to pay special attention, especially at the Johnston Road and Stamp Avenue crossings,” he said.
Although the railway crossing lights are working at intersections, students will learn how to flag through the train. They will also be working at night, and might use flares for signalling in the dark.
Walkers and people on ATVs are asked to stay off the railway tracks. “They are quite a concern; a lot of people walk on the tracks and the Roger Creek Trestle.”
