A bear that was critically injured after being hit by a car Saturday night in Abbotsford had to be put down by Abbotsford Police.
The collision took place at about 8:30 p.m. north of Harris Road on Highway 11 (the Abbotsford-Mission Highway).
A 30-year-old woman, with her one-year-old baby, was travelling north in a GMC SUV when the bear ran onto the busy highway.
The animal struck the vehicle with such force that it cracked the vehicle’s radiator, smashed the bumper and set off all the air bags.
The mom and her baby were not seriously injured, but the bear was found in critical condition in a grass area at the side of the road.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the animal appeared to have a couple of broken legs, and police made the decision at the scene to put it down.
