A BEAR that spent about six weeks eating its way along the bench near Halliwell Ave and Uplands School met its fate this morning when RCMP and the conservation office were called after it was sighted this morning near the school.
Police positioned themselves around the treed area near Uplands along Halliwell , at Munroe and on Twedle to keep the bear in the treed area.
Several officers, along with conservation officer Darryl Struthers, managed to tree the bear along Halliwell Ave. and shoot it.
Struthers said he came within 20 feet of the bear and it didn’t want to move, when normally bears would have a fear of humans and keep a farther distance away.
Struthers said it was a healthy adult male bear, who should’ve been a little fatter for this time of year.
Residents in the area first reported seeing the bear about six weeks ago and it was given time to move on through and out of town but it failed to do so.
With school starting today, and the bear so close to Uplands, there was a fear of the bear being dangerous to the children.
