Environment Canada is predicting that Bella Coola is heading into a stretch of unseasonably hot weather this week. Daytime highs for Friday are predicted to be 28 degrees; that’s a full 11 degrees above the average high of 17 degrees.
Nighttime lows are also predicted to be above average, with temperatures expected to stay above 10 degrees. Precipitation has also been lower than average. In April only 58.9mm of rain fell compared to an average of around 100mm, creating very dry conditions for the Valley. However, the province has not yet put in any fire bans or restrictions for our area.
“Our fire weather technicians and prevention crew examine a large variety of factors before they determine whether or not a fire ban will be enacted,” said Marg Drysdale, Coastal Fire Information Officer. “We do know it is supposed to be hot and dry this week but we’re expecting temperatures to return to seasonal norms the following week.”
