The founders of Berwick Retirement Communities say they oppose the rezoning of 222 Corfield St. South that is planned for a supportive housing project.
Chris and Gordon Denford sent a letter to mayor and council, dated June 19, stating that they oppose the rezoning because the supportive housing project is not compatible with Berwick Parksville which would be located at 180 Jensen Ave., across the street from 222 Corfield St. South.
The vote for third reading and adoption is on Wednesday, July 4.

Gordon told The NEWS that Berwick Parksville would become home to about 250 vulnerable seniors and a daycare for about 30 children.
Chris said Berwick is working along with Revera Inc., which purchased 180 Jensen Ave. a number of years ago. He said Revera and Berwick have been in talks for a seniors facility on the property, adding that it’s been “quite a long time in the making.”
The property at 180 Jensen Ave., Chris said, could also potentially be home to up to 300 rental housing units.
The June 19 letter to council from Berwick states that if council goes forward with the rezoning of 222 Corfield St. South, “it will seriously jeopardize the viability of our seniors residence and the future development of the remaining site for which we are considering providing up to 300 rental housing units.”
“Obviously if the supportive housing project does not proceed, then we are going full steam ahead with our Berwick project,” Chris told The NEWS.
Berwick Parksville has a development permit from the city and it’s currently in the process for a building permit, Chris said.
At the public hearing on June 19, residents voiced their concerns for Berwick’s viability if the rezoning for 222 Corfield St. South was adopted.
The City of Parksville said they were unable to comment on matters regarding the rezoning of 222 Corfield St. South following the public hearing.
