A District of Barriere press release notes that a member of the public recently brought forth the idea to Council that residents who want to take an active role in helping to prevent crime in Barriere, could form a neighbourhood watch and join the Block Watch Society of BC.
Barriere Council stated they would be pleased to consider any neighbourhood group’s request for assistance in the coverage of the annual membership fee to the Society and the associated signage.
The Block Watch program is a partnership between police and citizens that draws on members of the community for help in preventing and reducing neighbourhood crime. Through membership, the Society provides online access to training materials, decals and crime prevention tips.
All neighbourhood groups must be approved by the local RCMP with members completing a successful criminal record check.
This is a neighbour-helping-neighbour program that teaches citizens to secure their property, be aware of their surroundings, and report any suspicious activities to police.
Block Watch contributes to more cohesive neighbourhoods as a result of encouraging camaraderie between neighbours and can facilitate resolution of minor issues locally.
Residents interested in creating a neighbourhood watch are encouraged to discuss the program with their neighbours and contact Barriere RCMP at 250-672-9918, for more information.
Groups wishing to request a grant from the District of Barriere to cover the membership and signage costs are advised to contact Tasha Buchanan, Deputy Corporate Officer for the District Of Barriere, who will explain how to apply via a simple process. Call (250) 672-9751, or email: tbuchanan@barriere.ca .
