A blue heron will grace the wall behind council in North Saanich chambers once renovations are complete.
Council opted for the 70 by 35 inch reusable stick-on-peel-off version of their flag for the curved wall after staff priced out larger options.
Larger wall mural estimates from three local artists ranged from $1,450 to $2,200 for larger options.
“I prefer to save some money at this stage … I don’t mind what’s behind me now,” said councillor Cairine Green, gesturing to the flag replica behind her. “We have spent $130 on it … I don’t really see the need to spend $2,200 on a wall mural.”
“Course I want the huge, big one with blue heron’s all over the place,” said councillor Anny Scoones. “I’m a mural fan, so I would’ve gone for a big one, but not in a time of recession.”
“I like what we have there,” Councillor Ruby Commandeur said. “I think visually it will probably look better.”
The reusable version that hung on the wall during the meeting was an exact replica of the flag, including the words ‘North Saanich’ down the side.
Councillor Craig Mearns asked that words be removed for the council chambers’ artwork version.
Council agreed to purchase the less expensive peel-and-stick poster. Renovations are expected to finish in council chambers by the end of the month, or early March.
