Victoria police are looking for any information that would answer why a BMW was found sitting 30 metres from shore, in the waters off Fleming Beach Thursday morning.
Officers say the car was driven into the water sometime overnight Wednesday – but exactly what time, they aren’t sure. The car, which was blocking the boat launch, was found at 5 a.m. by some fishermen.
Witnesses offered conflicting reports, with some saying they heard a ruckus at 2 a.m., while another said the boat launch was clear at 4 a.m.
The grey-green newer model BMW 5 series belongs to a North Vancouver man who was visiting a friend. It was parked at an Esquimalt address and hadn’t been reported stolen by the time officers found it.
Greater Victoria Integrated Police Dive Team members inspected the vehicle and didn’t find anyone inside, nor was there evidence of foul play. A tow truck pulled the car out, and investigators continued to inspect it late Thursday.
Const. Mike Russell said cars aren’t often found in the waters surrounding Victoria.
“I can’t think of the last one like that,” he said.
Anyone with information about the car, which police believe was stolen, can call VicPD at 250-995-7654 or leave an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers, 1-800-222-8477.
