The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is issuing a boil water notice for users on the Duhamel water system beginning May 27 to perform system maintenance.
The notice is being issued as a precaution due to leak detection work planned May 27 to 29. The work will require depressurization of water mains that will create a potential for backflow of contaminants to enter the water system. The boil notice will remain in effect until acceptable water quality results are obtained from two consecutive bacteriological tests completed on the distribution system.
The regional district asks customers to void using water between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. as operators isolate sections of water main to determine leak location. Service interruptions will also occur during these times. Users on the system are asked to plan ahead by filling containers of water each evening prior to May 27, 28, and 29. Consumption level chlorine will be added to the system as an additional precautionary measure until Friday, June 5.
The RDCK and Interior Health recommend that all customers drink boiled water or a safe alternative until the notice is rescinded.
The Duhamel system has 93 active connections and draws water from a groundwater well in an aquifer.
