Second time in less than a year box has been vandalized

A book exchange box in Parksville’s Community Park was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning.

“We got called at 6:10 a.m. on the 19th,” said Parksville Fire Department chief Marc Norris. “There’s a book exchange box in the vicinity of the playground… the contents of the box were smouldering and the unit was pretty much destroyed.”

Norris said the fire wasn’t necessarily dangerous but he questions why anyone would do that type of thing.

He said this is the second time he’s aware of a book exchange box being burned in the Community Park, the first one occurring only seven months ago in mid-June.

“The same box, this one that burned this time was the rebuild of that one… which is unfortunate,” Norris said.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Stephen Rose said a complainant reported to police they saw three individuals running away from the fire scene, however no descriptions were provided.

“Police are attempting to obtain video surveillance from the City of Parksville to determine if it captured images of the culprits,” Rose said. ” The matter remains under investigation.”
