Drivers using Highway 4 between Port Alberni and Qualicum Beach can expect delays Monday night as crews from Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure remove a large boulder that crashed onto the road on the weekend.
The boulder tumbled down a slope early Sunday morning, coming to rest on the side of the road near the Cameron Lake picnic area.
The sight startled drivers travelling on Highway 4 between Port Alberni and Qualicum Beach on the weekend.
“It came to our attention early in the morning,” Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure regional deputy director Janelle Erwin said.
No one was apparently hurt in the incident, which closed the highway for a short time so crews could clear away some debris that had come down the hillside with the rock. “There was a pretty significant tree that came down with the rock,” she said.
Geotechnical engineers visited the site on Sunday but “they weren’t able to identify a point of origin,” Erwin said. They confirmed the site does not pose anymore danger to drivers.
Crews from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure plan to use a rock hammer to break apart the boulder Monday night into more manageable pieces to remove from the roadside. Erwin expects brief road closures during the process.
