If you are planning to go out to Port Renfrew in the next while, be prepared to take along some cash. Since early this week the phone lines have been down and there is no way to access internet, interact or credit cards.
“Bring cash,” is the word from Mike Hicks, Regional Director for the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area.
Hicks said Telus is unable to do any repairs or adjustments to the communications systems on Mt. Demers because of the weather and the expected high winds in the next few days.
The phone company has set up a portable phone booth in a cube van on the Pacheedaht beach to provide cell phone service or locals and to service one computer.
“My switching system,” said Hicks, “is working even though some say we should use tin cans and string.”
He said the $100,000 switiching system put in last year is up and running, the telephones though are not.
The phone company is attempting to route cell phone service through Port Angeles.
A message has been posted on the SEAPARC community bulletin board that says “bring cash” to Port Renfrew.
“It’s cool SEAPARC has come to help and aid Port Renfrew, and our good neighbour Sooke,” said Hicks.
