Burning of yard waste not permitted in Castlegar

Castlegar Fire Department is reminding residents that burning is prohibited.

The Castlegar Fire Department is reminding residents who live inside City of Castlegar boundaries that burning is prohibited.

The department has been responding to a number of complaints recently as people are beginning to clean up their yards for spring.

The city’s Open Burning Bylaw prohibits the burning of yard waste, garbage and construction materials.

Most of the complaints the department has been dealing with involve yard clean-up waste. Residents are advised to use the yard waste disposal facility located at the Castlegar Community Complex.

The only fires that are allowed are campfires no larger than one metre across and high. They must be contained, utilizing clean dry wood, on private property, a minimum three metres away from structures, fences, trees, easements and right of ways.

Campfires must also be supervised by adults, never left unattended and a means of extinguishing the fire such as a hose must be present.
