Following are the board highlights from the Jan. 25 School District #27 board meeting
Late busing
The board passed a motion to direct staff to do some financial projections to determine the viability of providing late bus runs for secondary students who attend extracurricular activities or tutoring programs.
Trustee Will Van Osch says he proposed the idea to see if this could work within the current budget.
Schools of choice
Information was also requested regarding students attending schools of choice outside of their catchment areas, as well as the current costs incurred for busing these students.
The school board doesn’t actually follow its own policy to charge parents this extra busing, but rather just absorbs the costs, Van Osch explains.
He says this should be reviewed because there are other aspects of the issue of cross-boundary students, and costs are key to planning for any reconfigurations.
“If students are allowed to go wherever they want, it makes it really hard to staff schools.”
This practice puts pressures on the
efficiencies of running the school where these students are intended to go, and also creates over-crowding problems at the schools they do attend, Van Osch adds.
