Bus link between Fraser Valley cities and SkyTrain could begin in 2022

Expansion of Fraser Valley Express had originally been planned for 2021

You won’t be able to take a bus directly between the Fraser Valley’s cities and SkyTrain next year, as previously planned, but there are sill hopes for a direct connection in the short-term future.

Prior to the onset of COVID-19, there had been plans to expand the Fraser Valley Express bus link to extend to the Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain station. The regional bus currently ends at Langley’s Covolth bus hub. Extending the service to SkyTrain would simplify transit connections between Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Metro Vancouver.

The expanded route was to begin operation in January of 2021. But it, along with BC Transit’s expansion plans in other communities, had been put on hold because of the pandemic.

Now, BC Transit says it wants to restart planning of expansions.

Staff at the Fraser Valley Regional District say there’s not much reason for the expansion of the express bus to not proceed. In a new report, they point to a healthy surplus of about $750,000, along with promises for more transit funding for local governments.

FVRD staff say the connection to Lougheed Station could now be launched in January 2022. The FVRD’s corporate services committee will have the chance to sign off on the proposed expansion at a meeting this week.
