Coast Capital Savings in Duncan has stepped up to assist an organization working to bring attention to the issue of missing and murdered men and women.
The Beverley Corners branch presented a cheque for $500 to Patsy Jones, money that will help send a group to a gathering at the Peace Arch on the Mainland on Friday.
It will be a meeting of family members and supporters from Canada and Washington State who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
About 60 people from Cowichan Tribes are expected to attend what is anticipated to be a huge gathering.
“We have a valued partnership with Cowichan Tribes and the local community, recognizing the impact these tragedies have had on the direct community and our country as a whole,” explained Bill Rae, manager of Coast Capital Savings in Duncan.
“As a part of our reinvesting 10 per cent bottom line back into the communities in which we do business, we look to make a tangible impact on youth and the work done by this organization certainly fits that.”

The Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Island Savings and with support from the Cowichan Valley Citizen and Amber Education, are holding a free, public candidates forum ahead of the 2019 federal election.
The forum will be held at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 9. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with an opportunity to meet the candidates in the theatre foyer. The forum itself will start promptly at 7 p.m.
“This forum will be the largest in the region and offers an opportunity to compare party platforms and get to know the candidates in attendance,” says Alec Wheeler, events and membership manager for the Chamber.
Alana DeLong, Conservative Party of Canada, Alistair MacGregor, NDP, Blair Herbert, Liberal Party of Canada and Lydia Hwitsum, Green Party of Canada will be in attendance.
Moderator Wade Simmons of Amber Education returns to marshal proceedings, ensuring equal opportunities to hear from all the candidates, and enabling the audience to pose as many questions as possible.
“Candidate forums are always lively events and the cross-section of attendees makes for insightful discussion and debate,” says Simmons.
“It’s one of the best platforms for the public to ask the tough questions about both national and local issues.”
Members of the public are encouraged to submit their questions by email in advance, and attendees can submit written questions which will be collected during the event. There will also be two audience microphones for questions from the floor.
“This year, the Chamber has engaged VITV to film the forum, including the live question and answer portion,” Wheeler says.
The video will be streamed online the day after the forum and will be available for viewing and sharing from the Chamber’s Facebook page.
