Local Treasures arts and crafts store in Whippletree Junction will host a Christmas event, beginning at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3.
Owner Claudia Ziegler said the event will include a Christmas light-up and a visit by Santa Claus who will be on hand to pass out small presents to children.
“There will be lots of community and Christmas spirit, lots of activities and, hopefully, carolling and music as well,” Ziegler said.
GBS Glass Blowing saying goodbye
GBS Glass Blowing will be closing its doors for the last time next month.
Owners Ann and Graham Fowle have decided to retire after 50 years of glass blowing and 16 years operating GBS at 678 Shawnigan Lake Rd..
In a statement, the couple said they will be having a sale leading up to their closure at Christmas and will have reduced prices on a wide range of their oil lamps.
“We would like to thank all of our customers for all the support and friendship we have been shown over the last 16 years,” they said.
Whole Hog transforms into Pigasus Services
The Duncan-based Whole Hog Productions Ltd. is under new ownership and name.
Sarah White recently purchased the assets of the company, which has been providing services and technical equipment to concerts, festivals, weddings and other venues across Vancouver Island for more than 30 years, and renamed it Island Pigasus Production Services.
White intends to continue the business much as it was under the previous name and ownership, and many long-time crew members will be staying on as well.

Nominate someone for Deeds Well Done
Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse in Duncan is now participating in the fourth annual “Deeds Well Done” community program.
Until Dec. 31, guests at the restaurant are encouraged to nominate fellow community members for their good deeds.
A nominated “good-deed doer” will be selected from each of the 32 communities across Western Canada that have a Mr. Mike’s franchise and will receive $500 to donate to a local registered charity of their choice.
The chosen nominees will also receive $100 gift cards from Mr. Mike’s.
“We launched our Deeds Well Done program four years ago to get people thinking about what’s really important around the holidays,” said company spokesman Mike Cordoba.
“For us, it’s giving back to the communities where we live and work.”

Coast Capital comes through with $10,000
Coast Capital Savings is, once again, helping to fund youth programs at the Cowichan Therapeutic Riding Association.
The $10,000 in funding renews a long-standing community partnership between the two organizations and a joint commitment to enhance the lives of youth in the Cowichan region.
The CRTA provides therapeutic riding and equine-based wellness programs for youth with disabilities.
Wendy Lachance, director of community leadership at Coast Capital Savings, said the CTRA program aligns with Coast Capital’s community investment programs which specifically focus on helping youth in the communities they serve.
“By investing in programs, like those offered at the CTRA, we’re creating a more inclusive environment where young people are actively engaged and empowered,” she said.
