It was a busy night for Abbotsford firefighters, who were called to two separate brush fires, as well as a double vehicle fire.
Crews were first called to the scene of a brush fire at around 9 p.m., which affected an electric pole and caused a transformer to explode.
While crews fought that fire, a second fire was called in at an urban park area near the University of Fraser Valley campus.
“(We) arrived and found (an) approximately 30 by 30 area involved in fire. In the time that it took to get lines about 150 feet into the woods, it had grown to about 100 by 100. Crews worked well to get the fire out and knock it back,” Assistant Chief Craig Leighton with the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service said at the scene.
“We’ve got multiple lines strung into the scene, and we’ve laid lines around the perimeter, so we’ve got it fully contained, and we’re just doing mop-up. It looks like the remnants of inappropriate cooking and a camp in the woods.”
Leighton said the service “threw a lot of resources” at the fire due to the location and because of how quickly the fire spread after crews arrived.
Leighton warned the public that conditions are “extremely dry” and “perfect” for small fires to become large.
Later in the night, at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, crews responded to a scene with two vehicles and a fence on fire.
Upon arrival, crews found the back of one SUV on fire, along with a fence, and the fire was so intense a car next to the SUV was caught up in the blaze.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control and put it out. The cause of the fire is unknown at this point.
