Busy night for Surrey responders with three separate injury crashes

SURREY — It was a busy shift for first responders in Surrey with three crashes Wednesday night that left several in hospital.

Police were called to a single-vehicle crash around 4 p.m., where a 53-year-old man was found trapped in his pickup truck after it left the road and rolled down an embankment.

The crash in the 12500-block 106A Avenue also involved two other occupants who fled the scene.

The trapped man was pulled from the truck and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver and other passenger turned up at hospital after being driven there by a friend.

The 43-year-old driver — who was also injured but is in stable condition — will be questioned to find out what caused the crash, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Murray Hedderson in a release Thursday.

There were also two separate pedestrian crashes that injured three.

Two pedestrians were sent to hospital with possible broken bones when they were hit by a pickup around 7:30 p.m. in the 12200-block of 90th Avenue.

A 28-year-old man was found on a grassy shoulder while a second, a 19-year-old woman, was found in a water-filled ditch.

Police have pointed out the pedestrians were wearing dark clothing and had their backs turned to oncoming traffic.

And around 8:50 p.m., police were called to a crash at City Parkway and 104th Avenue where a 54-year-old woman was hit by a vehicle.

She wasn’t in a crosswalk and she too was wearing dark clothing.

The woman was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with minor injuries.

Neither drugs, alcohol nor speed are considered factors in either pedestrian crash. Both drivers stayed at the scene and are co-operating with police, said Hedderson.

Surrey RCMP are asking for any witnesses to contact them at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers.
