West Kootenay Traffic police report an increase in excessive speeding

With the weather finally warming, police are seeing an increase in speeders.

Seven drivers had their vehicles impounded after being charged with excessive speed, reports Sgt. Chad Badry from the West Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit.

In one case, traffic patrol clocked a 41 year-old driver from Abbotsford doing 202 kilometers/hour near Castlegar – in a stretch zoned at 100 km/h.

As a result, the male lost his vehicle for seven days and was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed with a fine of $483. Police have also requested a review of the male’s drivers license.

In another vehicle stop, members of the Integrated Road Safety Unit stopped a driver because only one headlight was working.

During the subsequent investigation, police officers recovered over $700 in brand new tools, still in the package, stolen from a Kootenay area hardware store.

Police were are unable to release further details as the investigation is still ongoing.

However, Sgt. Badry noted, “The manager of the hardware store was definitely surprised and happy about the recovery.”
