A byelection in the Town of Comox may be set as soon as fall following an announcement from Coun. Pat McKenna that he is leaving his position.
On June 18, McKenna officially announced he is leaving the Comox Valley to return to his hometown of Antigonish, Nova Scotia to be closer with family by the end of June and will give up his seat at the council table.
“I feel really good about (returning home) and I’m really excited about it,” he said and added his last day as a councillor will be Aug. 31 in order to finish committee work.
He will attend both the July and August council meetings via Zoom.
McKenna is also the executive director for Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North.
The latest municipal election was held in October 2018 and terms for elected officials were changed from three to four years.
Mayor Russ Arnott explained while he hasn’t fully discussed the resignation with the town’s Chief Administrative Officer Jordan Wall, a fall byelection could be a possibility.
