Mountain improvements
The RDKS has no objections for Recreation Sites and Trails BC to construct a cabin and new mountain trail on Maroon Mountain in cooperation with the Terrace Off Road Cycling Association (TORCA).
The current Maroon Mountain trail is used for both hiking and mountain biking, and already maintained by the two organizations through a partnership agreement. The application offers to construct a new trail to the south of the existing trail to create a loop that would minimize erosion and detour bike traffic to increase overall trail safety. A cabin would allow for over-night stays by trail users.
For full support, the board has requested that appropriate First Nations are given an opportunity to comment, that environmental concerns are addressed, including bird nesting habitat and other tenure holders in the area are also consulted.
Access to the trail is via an existing road off Hwy 113. This road will require repair and ongoing maintenance for it to be useable.
Supporting gymnastics
The board has voted to contribute a one-time grant of $1,433.22 to the Terrace Peaks Gymnastics Club for them to purchase an automated external defibrillator (AED) to be used for their Seniors Can Move pilot program.
The gymnastics club has already received funding from the province to provide the free pilot exercise program for seniors, but is required to have an AED unit in order to offer the program.
The cost of an AED unit is $2,317.28 and the club is continuing to seek more donations.
Electoral Area C and E have $49,804 of unallocated grant in-aid funds available for community grants in the 2019 Budget.
Paint change
The RDKS has agreed to collect household paint at the Stewart Transfer Station and the Kitwanga Transfer station for the purpose of recycling by executing the Product Care Association of Canada Paint Depot Agreement.
Over the past number of years, the District of Stewart has collected household paint at the Stewart Landfill. Since the creation of the Stewart Transfer Station, the District of Stewart has agreed to transfer this recycling service to the regional district. There are currently no existing options for residents of the Kitwanga area to recycle household paint.
The household paint collection service will ensure environmentally responsible disposal of Stewardship accepted products, including; all aerosol paints, exterior and interior acrylic, latex, and oil-based paints, wood finishing oil, marine paint, varnish, primers, anti-rust paint, and deck and floor coating. The district will receive $45.00 per full tub skid as compensation for collection.
Charge North representation
The board has elected director Eric Nyce to represent the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine on the Charge North Electric Vehicle Network Study Advisory Committee.
In Dec. 2017, the RDKS committed $9,000 to participate in an Electric Vehicle Network Study for Highways 16 and 97. The project has been carried into 2020 due to its success and potential grant funding for charging stations across the north. Its next phase requires decision-making from the Advisory Committee regarding funding priorities and infrastructure deployment.
Five other regional districts are participating with representation on the project’s Advisory Committee, which includes North Coast, Bulkley-Nechako, Fraser Fort George, Thompson-Nicola, and Cariboo, with the Community Energy Association (CEA) leading the study.
