Cache Creek Council Briefs

From May 9

From the Cache Creek Council meeting on May 9.

Roll Call: Mayor John Ranta and councillors Ida Makaro and Darrell Rawcliffe. Coun. Jim Loucks attended by Skype. Coun. Wyatt McMurray was absent.

Road conditions

Quality Manager for Interior Roads’ South Cariboo division, Phil Doddridge, attended to hear of any concerns the Village had about highway maintenance.

Mayor John Ranta mentioned the rough spots in the outer southbound lanes from the Oasis Hotel to the Cache Creek Landfill.

Coun. Darrell Rawcliffe noted that the entrance to the golf course had been damaged due to blocked culvert, but it was determined that the culvert was on private property and outside the mandate of Interior Roads.

Tables and chairs

Council granted the Grad class free use of the old Community Hall tables and chairs for the Grad on June 9. It’s being held in Ashcroft this year.

Mobile home park

Council agreed to execute a covenant with Bridgehill Holding regarding their development proposal of alarge mobile home park and campground on the west side of Hwy 1, across from the Bear Claw Restaurant. The convenant is to ensure that once 40 mobile homes are constructed, that use Old Cariboo Rd. as their primary road access, a traffic analysis of the road will be performed to investigate the traffic impacts on Old Cariboo Rd. and Todd Rd.

Roads and trails

Council agreed to apply for two grants under the federal Gas Tax Agreement. The first application is for funding of the reconstruction of Sunvalley Cres., Maclean Cres., and Parke Rd. in the amount of $2,662,365.

The second application is for $403,000 to create walkways and bicycle trails.“Hopefully we’ll be more successful [in obtaining a grant] now that we have a Parks Trail Master Plan,” said Mayor Ranta.

Graffiti Days

Council approved $5,000 in grants to the Graffiti Days committee as well as several requests for assistance and free swimming pool use.

The one thing they didn’t approve was $4,000 for a chair/table storage container. Mayor Ranta explained that the Village was prepared to purchase the 40-foot storage container for the park, not provide a grant for it.

Mental health

Mayor Ranta expressed dismay that at a recent meeting of regional Local Governments, a resolution that Cache Creek had written for the Union of BC Municipalities conference in October had been “hijacked” by members and rewritten.

The resolution called on the provincial government to restore adequate mental health services in rural communities to alleviate the workload on local RCMP, but the work “rural” was changed to “all”.

“It diminished the intention of the resolution to focus on rural communities who had lost their services,” said Ranta.

Council agreed to put forward their original resolution.
