West Shore students can skip the queue to get into a popular course that touches on some of the most trendy topics in popular culture.

Camosun College has been working on attracting students from this fast growing region for several years.

The school offers post-secondary courses at the West Shore Annex as well as Spencer middle school.

Among the available courses is a Geography 111 course on Natural Hazards, taught by Trisha Jarrett.

“The general public gets inundated with (information) about natural hazards,” she said, explaining the same course is offered at Camosun’s Lansdowne campus, where it has a long wait list.

The course examines environmental processes and links them to natural hazards that are known to take place across the planet. Students also learn how human development and planning can play a role in how much risk populated areas face.

“A student might say, ‘I hear a lot about (natural hazards) in my everyday life,’” she said, explaining students will learn to use critical thinking to question how the media reports on natural disasters. “Is this climate change? What’s going on with our own weather?”

Other courses include Criminology 150 Administration of Justice, Psychology 130 Contemporary Issues, Art 106 Indigenous Studio Arts and English 151 Academic Writing Strategies.

The West Shore courses run during the evenings beginning in the week of Sept. 10.

“We get a broad sampling of students,” Jarrett said, noting the accessibility of both holding the classes in this area and after normal working hours.

“It’s interesting when you step outside the box of a classroom what kind of students you attract.”
