Mounties and the police dog Rex tracked down a knife-wielding suspect Wednesday night near Nunns Creek Park in Campbellton.
According to RCMP, at 8:51 p.m., police responded to an incident where a man pulled a knife on occupants residing in a residence located in the 1400 block of 16th Ave.
When police arrived, the suspect had fled and was believed to still be carrying the weapon. All available officers responded to the area and Rex picked up a scent leading along the Island Highway, through bushes and trails, and leading to the Walmart parking lot where officers were stationed at various check points. Apparently the suspect saw police too and tried fleeing down another path, but was quickly apprehended without further incident.
“Police service dogs are another tool for police officers in the execution of their duties,” said Cpl. Poppy Hallam in a news release. “This situation was high-risk, with potential for further violence, but was contained quickly with no injury to police or the public.”
A 22-year-old Campbell River man is facing a charge of assault with a weapon and is expected to make his first appearance in Campbell River provincial court on June 10.
