A Canada Post worker is being credited for rescuing an individual who was gagged and in distress.
The mail carrier, who has asked to remain anonymous, was walking her usual route last Wednesday afternoon when she thought she heard a dog crying.
But it wasn’t a dog.
Instead what she saw was a person banging its head on a basement window, with what the mail carrier describes as something black across the person’s mouth.
“He was trying to get help and he had something across his mouth,” says the Canada Post worker, who called 911.
RCMP confirmed last Wednesday that police responded to the call and found three individuals in need of medical assistance in a house on Alder Street.
The three were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The Canada Post workers says the home is in an area that still receives home delivery and if door-to-door delivery had already been phased out, the story may have had a different ending.
“If this happened in September, I wouldn’t have been there,” said the letter carrier. “Some people have said we’re the eyes in the neighbourhood.
“I’ve had elderly women say to me, ‘I like knowing you’re around in the neighbourhood during the day keeping an eye on things.’”
But that will change somewhat come mid-September as Canada Post is planning to end home delivery to all homes in Campbell River and replace the service with community mailboxes.
