Three former councillors are considering running in this fall’s Sooke byelection.

Jeff Stewart, who lost the 2018 election, said he’s received positive support for another try at a council seat.

“My focus would be on spending our tax dollars wisely and focusing on an efficient municipal operation,” said Stewart, the manager of Western Foods in Sooke.

For Herb Haldane, who served on council prior to 2014, and captured nearly 30 percent of the vote in a 2018 bid for council, the decision to run will be depend on who else runs.

“We don’t need any more green people on the council; that’s certain. We have enough of that right now.”

Haldane expressed his reluctance to “be handcuffed to a toxic environment at municipal hall,” and said he would enter the race if other appropriate candidates did not throw their hat in the ring.

“If I did it, it wouldn’t be for me, but for the community,” he said.

Rick Armour, who also served on Sooke council prior to 2014, admits the thought of running again has crossed his mind, but said he remains undecided.

“I can’t give a firm answer at this point. It would depend on a number of items falling into place,” he said.

Sooke council called a byelection on July 15 following the death of Brenda Parkinson. The vote is set for Sept. 28.
