When Christy Clark names her new cabinet on Sunday, MLA Ron Cantelon won’t be sweating bullets.
After all, said the Parksville Qualicum representative, he’s likely the only MLA who will at least hold onto his current job, if not get bumped up to a better one.
“I’m the only one who stands to improve their position,” Cantelon said. “I’ve been elected until next July as caucus chair, so I’m the only one who will be in the same job — at least — for sure.”
Cantelon said each MLA has had a private interview with Clark to discuss their strengths and interests and those selected for cabinet can expect to hear on Sunday.
“You either get a phone call Sunday afternoon or you don’t,” he said. “Nobody will know until then.”
Cantelon said he would be delighted to serve in a Clark cabinet but declined to say if there’s a particular posting that interests him.
“We will see,” he said. “I would be happy with anything I get.”
Whatever the position in which he finds himself in addition to caucus chair, Cantelon said he’ll be presiding over the same group of MLAs, but with a very different tone under Christy Clark.
“We’ve had one caucus meeting already and her presence has given the entire caucus a lift,” he said.
“There’s no doubt about it. This has changed everything. Instead of looking negatively at everything, we are looking positively and looking forward. There’s optimism and change and people are looking forward to change.”
