Some Gordon Head residents had a rude awakening after a silver Hyundai Accent drove through two fences and crashed into a home in the 1500 block of Kenmore Road early Wednesday morning.
Shortly after 3 a.m., police received a call about the late-night accident and responded, along with the Saanich Fire Department and B.C. Ambulance Service. The crash caused significant structural damage, as the vehicle hit one of the supporting corners of the house.
“Structural integrity is an issue – it was an issue for our firefighters last night,” said Sgt. Dean Jantzen with Saanich Police. “That’s why the vehicle has been left in place for fear of pulling it out and causing more damage.”
Jantzen said the occupants of the vehicle appear to be two local teenage girls, who fled the scene of the accident and were later tracked down by police.
“There was more than one witness that confirmed for us that two people fled the area,” he said, noting police brought out a K-9 officer in their search efforts.
“Oddly enough, while this was happening and we were actively searching, one of the parents of one of the occupants contacted the Victoria Police, and that led to one of our officers actually speaking with one young lady [early Wednesday].”
He said police haven’t determined the cause of the accident and aren’t sure if drugs or alcohol were a factor. He added that the occupants of the home were uninjured, and that the police report described any other injuries as minor.
In addition to emergency services, B.C. Hydro was called to the scene as the crash caused a local blackout for houses in the immediate area.
Jantzen said it’s too early for charges to be recommended and Saanich Police are expected to continue their investigation, including interviewing other witnesses.
