On the evening of July 30, the Elk Valley RCMP responded to a report of a car fire at Lake Koocanusa.
The Baynes Lake Fire Department was able to control the fire before it spread to surrounding bush.
According to Cpl. Robert Wright, the RCMP is still investigating the situation.
“We received a report of a fire, we went down to investigate and we are still trying to identify the owner of the property,” he told The Free Press. “We have had some leads that have come forward to identify possible suspects and I guess we are actively investigating those.”
This is not the first incident of a car fire in the South Country this summer. The RCMP is aware of the other incidences and said not all of the incidents are due to vandalism.
“No, this is not the first incident. We have had a few other vehicle fires down there. Not all of them are mischief or vandalism.”
Residents of the area have expressed their concerns to the Regional District of the East Kootenay (RDEK), as there is concern of more incidents similar to this occurring over the summer.
