First response emergency crews were called to a long, flat stretch of highway outside Peachland mid-day Easter Monday.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., reports of a vehicle plunging into Okanagan Lake near the intersection of Renfrew Road and Highway 97 revealed a car had pulled to the side, but failed to stop before rolling into the water.

The sole occupant of the vehicle, the 87-year-old driver, was extracted from the car by Peachland Fire Rescue; the vehicle itself was soon submerge in the lake.

A statement from police says the driver was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the collision does not appear to be medical in nature; although, the investigation is ongoing.

There has already been a fatality as the result of a driver plunging into an Okanagan Lake in the last few months.

In December, a 58-year-old woman from Salmon Arm perished in Wood Lake after her Jeep TJ lost control along Highway 97 outside Kelowna en route to Vernon.

Witnesses reported the jeep was travelling northbound on Highway 97 when it began to fishtail. The driver was unable to regain control of her vehicle before it left the roadway and became sumbmerged.

A group of passing motorists made a valiant effort to save her, using ropes and chains to try and pull the vehicle from the water; unfortunately, the ropes broke.

Police and the rescuers were eventually able to free her so she could be transferred to a waiting ambulance, but she could not be resuscitated.
