It was business as usual Tuesday morning after the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex was evacuated and shut down Monday evening due to a fire.
“We’re lucky,” said Geoff Paynton, CMRC director of community services. “There was no damage. The fire happened in an area of the roof that was being replaced [the next day].”
Williams Lake firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 6:25 p.m. for a report of a fire in the roof Monday night.
Complex users, such as hockey players, figure skaters and swimmers, as well as staff evacuated the building and waited word in the parking lot as firefighters extinguished the fire.

WLFD deputy chief and incident commander Rob Warnock said the fire was inside the roof at the back of the building.
Paynton said some water did get into the building due to efforts to put out the fire, however, it was quickly cleaned up.
Minor hockey user groups did cancel remaining ice times.
Paynton said the arena was reopened after fire crews gave the all clear at about 8:30 p.m.
Roofers had been repairing the roof prior to the fire.
