The City of Castlegar’s water quality advisory was rescinded Tuesday afternoon.
The advisory had been in place for eight days when turbidity — the cloudiness of water — slightly exceeded recommended levels.
The situation was caused by the spring freshet or runoff, but turbidity problems do not happen often in Castlegar.
“It is not very common because we have a good, deep intake on Arrow Lakes so the turbidity from runoff doesn’t usually affect us,” explained Castelgar’s CAO Chris Barlow.
According to the city, the water distribution system has been completely flushed and turbidity levels have normalized.
A boil water advisory was never in place, but the city had recommended that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems and anyone seeking additional protection drink bottled or boiled water during the advisory period.
Turbidity had reached acceptable levels by Saturday, May 19, but the city chose to keep the advisory in place for a few extra days to ensure the entire system was flushed.
