Wet snow and unseasonably mild temperatures are in the forecast for Castlegar this weekend.
Up to four centimetres of wet snow is expected overnight Friday.
“We could get anywhere from one to four centimetres of wet snow tonight,” says Ron Lakeman, weather forecaster at the Southeast Fire Centre. “And it could still be a bit of wet snow Saturday morning.”
There are chances of sunshine on Saturday as well.
“It looks unsettled,” says Lakeman, “as in there is a chance of some wet snow, some rain and the sun comes out at times and the temperatures are unseasonably mild.”
Temperatures could reach up to plus three on Saturday afternoon.
Lakeman says another system will then enter the region on Sunday, bringing wet snow or rain during the afternoon or evening.
“This one could change to rain, but it could also produce anywhere from four to eight centimetres of wet snow in the valley Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening,” he says.
Temperatures could rise to plus one or two on Sunday, so it’s hard to say whether or not any snow will accumulate and whether or not it will be snow or rain, or snow turning into rain.
Lakeman says that this time of the year the high should be around zero degrees, but the high for Thursday was plus seven, and temperatures could hit four or five degrees on Friday.
“So it is unseasonably mild,” he says. “It’s not going to be as mild over the weekend, but still milder than normal.”
