CCRD Highlights: economic development, Walker Island concession done public inspection

The latest CCRD board meeting was held September 8, 2016 at the CCRD office in Bella Coola.

Sgt. Thiessen from the Bella Coola RCMP Detachment attended the meeting to report on the two initiatives that are underway.  In October, two people from both the Nuxalk Nation and the Bella Coola RCMP will be taking the “I am a Kind Man” training. This is a grassroots program that is aimed at ending violence against indigenous women. The Bella Coola RCMP have also partnered with BC Parks to increase police presence in Tweedsmuir Park South, Stuie, and Firvale.

Consultants Maura Walker and Carey McIver joined the meeting to give a progress report on the Solid Waste Management Plan. The process has identified priorities, which include a Development Operation and Closure Plan, a landfill filling plan, and an updated hydrological study including establishment of groundwater monitoring wells. The next and 3rd meeting of the Solid Waste Advisory Group (SWAG) will be November 9th.

Additional highlights from the CCRD board meeting include a one-time community economic development contribution agreement will be created with Bella Coola Valley Tourism. The Walker Island concession went through its Public Health Inspection at the end of September. Road work was completed on Denny Island, which included roadside ditching to prevent further erosion of the road surface. Two re-zoning applications were considered.

The next meeting of the CCRD board of directors will be held on Thursday, October 13th and, as always, members of the public are welcome to attend. For the complete draft of the September board of directors meeting agenda and minutes, please visit the CCRD website at www.ccrd-bc.ca.
