The public has been invited to a celebration of life for former investigative journalist and coroner Barb McLintock, who passed away Dec. 29 at age 68 shortly after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 15 in the Sequoia Centre at Royal Oak’s McCall Gardens (4665 Falaise Drive). In lieu of flowers, attendees are asked to make donations to Broken Promises Animal Rescue and/or Victoria Hospice.

McLintock worked as a legislative reporter for most of her career before becoming an investigating coroner in 2004. By 2011 McLintock was the driving force behind the B.C. Coroners’ strategic programs department. She retired from full-time work in 2017 but continued to contribute to the department.
During her career as a reporter, McLintock broke down walls for female journalists, becoming the first woman named Victoria bureau chief for the Province and winning awards for her investigative work.
Described in her obituary as a “trail-blazing reporter, a dedicated coroner, an avid ornithologist, a Girl Guide leader and a lover of cats and horses,” McLintock’s death has struck a chord with reporters, politicians and the B.C. public.
Known by many for her kindness, storytelling, and quirky habits, like knitting and bird watching, journalists and politicians took to Twitter to share their memories of McLintock following her death.
