Nanaimo’s BMX community and others can gather to celebrate the life of a young athlete who died as a reigning national champion.
Aidan Webber’s family announced through the Nanaimo BMX Association that a service will be held March 31 at the Beban Park social centre.
Webber, who was 18, died Sunday in a workplace accident off the coast of Port Hardy.
“Aidan was an exceptional human being, who lived life to the fullest with a sense of adventure and passion…” noted the statement from his parents Jim and Nicole Webber. “He was a force of nature, a man who lived his life with positivity, joy and generosity. He didn’t do anything half speed. He lived his life full throttle.”
The Webbers said they are devastated, but “have found comfort in the outpouring of love and support” from the world of BMX and other people who knew Aidan and the family.
The family added that they hope the workplace investigation takes place “without speculation or interference” and added that Aidan died doing a job he loved.
The celebration of life will be March 31 at 2 p.m. with doors opening at 1 p.m. The family said at that time, it will provide details of a memorial fund it plans to set up “to create a legacy for young people in Aidan’s name.”
Meanwhile, Mowi Canada West released a statement on the death of Aidan Webber.
“There is currently an investigation ongoing into an incident on Sunday, March 10, involving a contractor at Mowi Canada West’s Robertson Island Farm near Port Hardy that resulted in a fatality to an employee of the contract company,” stated Chris Read, communications manager for Mowi Canada West. “Our thoughts are with the family at this time, all of us at Mowi are devastated by this tragedy.”
