Charges laid after stolen vehicle attempt

On May 9, Kelowna RCMP received a report of a male seen unlawfully inside a vehicle

A man attempting to steal a vehicle Tuesday has been charged.

On May 9, shortly after 6 p.m., Kelowna RCMP received a report of a male seen unlawfully inside a vehicle parked in the 2700 block of KLO Road.

The complainant quickly recognized the situation was suspicious, he noted detailed description information of both the suspect and the green Acura Integra he was observed fleeing in.

A subsequent query of the vehicle’s license plate along with its Vehicle Identification Number, revealed that the car had been reported stolen to police on Monday, May 8 from the 700 block of KLO Road.

“RCMP would like to commend our complainant for his quick actions, as he provided police with important detailed information on the incident, the suspect and his associated vehicle,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “A plain clothes officer, already in the immediate area, was able to quickly locate and track the stolen vehicle’s movements to a parking lot in the 1600 block of Leckie Road.”

Kelowna general duty officers converged on the business’ parking lot where the male suspect and his female passenger exited the stolen vehicle. The man was taken into police custody outside the store, while the woman was arrested by officers inside the store. She was later released without charge.

Jamie Michael Sugden, 25, has been charged with the following criminal offences, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of his probation order. He has also been charged with offences under the Motor Vehicle Act for allegedly driving while prohibited or suspended.
