A pickup truck heading east along Highway 14 left the roadway and plunged about 100 feet down a steep embankment in the Shirley District, just north of Muir Creek on the morning of March 31.
The incident occurred at a sharp bend in the road, the site of numerous similar incidents in the past. The female occupants are both Sooke residents.
The driver was apparently ejected before the truck headed down the hill, while it took the jaws of life and numerous emergency personnel to extricate the passenger from the pickup.
Shirley Fire Rescue Chief Donovan Ray said later said that were treated in hospital, the driver being released the same day while the passenger was held overnight for observation.
The overall response to the incident inspired many kudos from Chief Ray, who spreaded credit around.
“I would like to give a big thank you to the off-duty nurses who stopped and offered assistance to the injured driver and passenger. You were a big help.”
Ray also saluted members of Sooke Fire Rescue, the BC Ambulance Service, and the RCMP.
