A family that is currently homeless following a fire is asking for the community’s help in getting their feet back on the ground.
Joni Schembri and her family of four were one of three families living in the Boundary Road house at the time of the fire on Thursday, June 17. She was recently able to go into the home to see what was salvageable.
She found some clothes and dishes which were saved, but they are now in need of other items as they do not have renter’s insurance.
Her family is looking for a barbecue, mini fridge, pop-up table and chairs. They are also collecting bins and boxes to store any salvageable items that come out of the house until they find a rental home.
They are currently living in a trailer on the property and therefore they cannot take furniture at this time.
But what’s needed most is money.
“Gift cards and cash are what is most useful right now,” Schembri said. “We would be able to purchase a few things needed right now. Remaining funds would be used for furnishing a home later and help take a load off of financial burdens while time has to be taken off work to clean up this mess.”
A total of 15 people were living in the large house when the massive fire broke out around 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 17 in the 3900 block of Boundary Road near No. 4 Road, right on the border of Chilliwack and Abbotsford.

There were seven people home at the time of the fire and everyone got out of the house safely, including a 90-year-old man and a baby.
To donate cash, gift cards, or any of the above mentioned items to Schembri and her family, contact her via private message on Facebook or joni_heetebrij@hotmail.com. E-transfers can be made to that email address.
