The Elkford Food Bank is currently putting together their annual Christmas Hampers for Elkford residents in need this upcoming holiday season.
“It’s something that the food bank has always done here, and I think especially this year, whatever we can do to brighten somebody’s day is a good thing,” said Karen Lewis, manager of the Elkford Food Bank.
The hampers, which will be distributed to locals around Dec. 19, include various items donated by residents along with a number of corporate donations from local organizations including Teck, Kootenay Market, and Columbia Basin Trust.
Though pandemic restrictions prevent the Elkford Food Bank from running any fundraisers at this year, Lewis said the Elkford Food Bank is still accepting donations.
“We have been very fortunate, the citizens of Elkford are amazingly generous,” said Lewis, who emphasized how grateful she is for all the community donations that sustain the Christmas Hamper initiative.
Though in previous years the community was encouraged to donate predominantly non-perishable food items, according to Lewis, other products will be accepted this year as a result of the current COVID-19 situation.
“We’re considering maybe throwing in something like magic mini gloves and jigsaw puzzles, those types of things, just to kind of perk up people,” added Lewis.
Alongside receiving a variety of meats as well as products to make a Christmas breakfast, the hampers also typically include either turkeys or roasting chickens, depending on family sizes.
To be added to the list of recipients for this year’s hampers, call the Elkford Food Bank at 250-910-7088 by Dec. 10.
