Christmas trees will be going up in flames on January 4, 2020 for Fernie on Fire.
The fifth annual event will take place at the outdoor rink near the Fernie Aquatic Centre and is a great chance to safely get rid of your Christmas tree and enjoy a huge bon fire.
Organizer Dennis Schafer spearheaded the Fernie on Fire event when he was a city councillor.
“One of my friends came to me after I was freshly elected and said, ‘Red Deer used to do this so see what you can do’,” explained Schafer. “So I made it happen.”
Schafer noted that there will also be live music, raffles, and 50/50 tickets on sale. He added, “I absolutely love this event and how the community comes together.”
“It’s always nice to have that local crowd come together after the hustle and bustle of the holidays and it’s sort of a fun send off to the holidays.”
If watching the flickering flames makes you work up an appetite, there will be burgers, hot dogs and both hot and cold beverages available at the event. There will also be a beer garden for the adults to enjoy some beverages to help keep them warm.
This year, the Nordic Society will be volunteering at the event and will receive some of the donations.
Residents can drop their trees off at the City Works yard during regular business hours for the week leading up to the tree burning event. There will also be a curbside pick up of trees on January 4 but residents are reminded that trees must be on the curb before 8:00 a.m.
